Hatchet Lady: Carry Nation, Angel of Destruction

Written by Savannah Reich
Music by Luc Parker
Directed by John Heimbuch
December 1 – 16, 2017 at Red Eye Theatre
and streaming November 2020

Carry Nation splinters unsuspecting saloons with her mighty hatchet! She targets nothing less than the limits of society. The men would shut her down, but God calls her on, and her awesome legacy is one of inspiration, passion and determination. An unabashedly feminist rock musical!

Reviews

Maren Ward received a 2017 Minnesota Theater Award for her performance as Frances / Carry A. Nation.

“Hatchet Lady is one continuous surge of intensity from start to cataclysmic finish.”
– John Olive, HowWasTheShow
“Hatchet Lady rocks out to weapon-wielding anti-booze bad-ass Carrie Nation… By the cathartic climax, the audience is practically on its feet.”
– Jay Gabler, City Pages
“Maren Ward gives an absolutely fearless performance as both Carrie and her biographer… [Hatchet Lady is] weird and wacky and kinda wonderful, touching on issues of feminism, relationships, alcohol, activism, and finding one’s passion. But does it really have to be about something? Maybe it just is, it’s all its singular guts and glory”
– Cherry and Spoon
